Cover-Up Tattoos in Jacksonville
Yes, we do cover-ups. Bring the old tattoo into the shop and we'll tell you what's realistic — what it will take to cover it, what the new piece will need to look like, and whether covering it is even the right call. Nobody gets a cover-up quote over the phone, because nobody can see the tattoo over the phone.
A cover-up is not a patch. It's a new tattoo designed around an old one, and the old one gets a vote in every decision: the size, the darkness, the subject, the placement. Done right, the only person who knows there was ever something underneath is you.
Can My Tattoo Be Covered Up?
Most tattoos can be covered. How dark it is, how big it is, and how well it has healed decide the approach.
The new design has to be bigger and darker than the old one. That's not a preference, it's how ink works. Skin isn't paper; you can't put a light color over a dark one and expect the dark one to disappear. Whatever is underneath has to be absorbed into the new piece — hidden inside heavy shading, folded into a black outline, or buried under solid color that's darker than what's there now.
Dense black and heavily saturated color need the most work. A faded, blown-out tattoo from twenty years ago is usually an easier cover than a crisp, solid-black tribal piece from last spring. Old work that has spread and softened gives the artist more to work with, not less.
The tattoo has to be fully healed. Fresh work, raised scarring, and skin that's still recovering need time before anyone tattoos over them. If you're looking at a cover-up because a tattoo went wrong recently, the honest answer may be "come back in a few months."
What Cover-Up Tattoos Actually Look Like
Bold designs with strong blacks. That's the short version.
Florals, animals, skulls, traditional imagery — subjects that have natural areas of dense black and heavy shading — give the artist places to hide the old lines. This is where the shop's American traditional foundation pays off: bold outlines and proper saturation are exactly what a cover-up needs, and they're what we build every tattoo on anyway. Black and grey work with deep shading does the same job in a different look.
What usually doesn't work: fine line, light pastels, and anything that depends on open skin showing through. Those styles have nowhere to put the old tattoo. If you've got your heart set on a delicate piece over a dark tattoo, we'll say so before you spend money on it.
Expect the new tattoo to be bigger than you first pictured. A good cover-up isn't the smallest thing that hides the old one — it's a piece you'd want on its own, that happens to hide the old one. If you'd only be getting it to cover something, the design will look like it.
Cover-Up or Rework?
Sometimes the better answer is fixing what's there.
A tattoo with a solid design and rough execution — wobbly lines, patchy color, faded black — can often be reworked: lines cleaned up, black re-packed, color brought back. That keeps the tattoo you chose and gets it looking the way it should have the first time. It's usually less work and less money than a full cover.
A rework won't fix a tattoo you don't want. If the subject is the problem, it's a cover-up. If the quality is the problem, ask about a rework first. We'll tell you which one makes sense when we see it.
Consult or Walk-In?
Consults are best. Depending on size, color, application, and shop availability, a cover-up could possibly be done as a walk-in — but a consult is encouraged, and for most cover-ups it's the only way to get the design right.
Here's what happens at a consult: an artist looks at the tattoo in person, talks through what you want, and tells you what will and won't work over it. You get an honest read on size and darkness, a direction for the design, and an estimate before any work begins. Like every appointment at the shop, a non-refundable deposit holds your spot and comes off the final price.
Bring the old tattoo (obviously), plus any reference for what you'd like instead. Photos of subjects you like, styles you're drawn to, other cover-ups you've seen — all useful as conversation starters. Your artist draws your piece; we don't copy someone else's.
Walk-in weekends are Saturday and Sunday, 11am to 7pm. Weekday walk-ins can usually happen, but that varies by day and hour. Feel free to drop in — if there isn't time to tattoo a cover-up that day, we'll do the consult and get you scheduled. Want a specific artist? Pricing follows the same rule as everything else here: size, complexity, placement, and time. Cover-ups often run larger and darker than a fresh piece of the same subject, and the estimate will reflect that. More on how pricing and deposits work on the FAQ page.
Healing a cover-up is no different from healing any other tattoo — keep it clean, keep it out of the sun, don't pick at it. The tattoo aftercare page has the full rundown, and touch-ups are free within 90 days.
