Travis Costello

Founder of Mister Tattoo. Jacksonville native. Twenty-plus years of tattooing rooted in American traditional, black and grey, and Japanese work.

Travis Costello founded Mister Tattoo in 2021 with a clear goal: to give Jacksonville a shop that was serious about the craft, rooted in American traditional tattooing, and built around artists who actually gave a damn. More than twenty years of tattooing — and a lifetime of living inside the culture — went into that decision. Travis is a Jacksonville native, and this shop is a product of everything he's learned in this city and everywhere he went before coming back to it.

His introduction to tattooing came early. As a child, he became fascinated watching his uncle's work — covered in pieces from Philadelphia Eddie, one of the foundational figures in East Coast traditional tattooing. That early exposure planted something that didn't go away.

Travis began tattooing in earnest in 2006. By 2009 he was working in Jacksonville's Riverside Arts District at 8th Day Tattoo under the mentorship of Tim Herbert, building the technical foundation that would carry everything that followed. In 2012 he moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where he spent five years managing Charleston Tattoo Company and deepening his study of American traditional history. Charleston is also where he first crossed paths with Zach Westcott. In 2015, Travis began building tattoo machines — a pursuit that took him to Lucky Supply Tattoo Museum and produced a line of machines now available through Lucky Supply USA. In 2017 he returned to Jacksonville to tattoo at Inksmith and Rogers, where he met Tim Shafer. The two opened Mister Tattoo together in the fall of 2021.

Working with Travis

Walk-in weekends are the norm here — every Saturday and Sunday, 11am to 7pm — and we can usually take walk-ins during the week too, though that varies by the day and the hour. Appointments are the best way to make sure you get Travis and the time you need. Feel free to drop in either way: if there isn't time to tattoo today, you'll get a quick consult and an appointment on the books. For larger custom work — back pieces, sleeves, anything that needs planning — that in-person consult is where it starts. Pricing is discussed directly before any work begins.
