Julissa Yaselin

Julissa Yaselin grew up making things. Drawing for friends in grade school, painting seriously in high school, developing an eye for what makes a design work long before she ever picked up a tattoo machine. She attended Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville — one of the most competitive arts magnet schools in the state — where she majored in ceramics and minored in painting. The parallel between the permanence of ceramics and the permanence of tattooing started to become clear well before she arrived at Mister Tattoo.

Born in Austin, Texas, Julissa grew up surrounded by tattoo culture — large-scale work on family members made an impression early, and the idea of tattooing as a serious art form was never abstract to her. She arrived at Mister Tattoo as a shop hand on weekends and was formally offered an apprenticeship under Travis Costello. Under his mentorship, she has been developing at a pace that reflects the seriousness of her foundation and the quality of her instruction.

Her flash work has a distinctive cartoon-influenced character — playful, graphically confident, and executed with a clarity that reflects her illustration background. Her American traditional pieces show the training she's received: properly structured, correctly weighted, with the bold line quality that makes traditional work hold up over time.

She got her start tattooing here at Mister Tattoo, beginning as a shop hand on the weekends and then being formally offered an apprenticeship under fellow Jacksonville tattoo artist Travis Costello. Under his mentorship, Julissa learned how to create a visually appealing design that will stand the test of time. She loves learning something new everyday and constantly meeting new people walking through the shop doors. Julissa enjoys numerous styles of tattooing and finds joy in creating the perfect design for each and every job, whether big or small.

Working with Julissa

Walk-in weekends are the norm here — every Saturday and Sunday, 11am to 7pm — and we can usually take walk-ins during the week too, though that varies by the day and the hour. Appointments are the best way to make sure you get Julissa and the time you need. Feel free to drop in either way: if there isn't time to tattoo today, you'll get a quick consult and an appointment on the books. Flash and smaller custom designs work well as walk-ins; for something larger or more involved, that in-person consult is where it starts.
